Spotify CEO Daniel Ek has announced that it will invest $100 million in licensing, development, and marketing of music and audio content from under-promotional creators.
In a letter to company employees, Spotify CEO Daniel Ek, one of the leading companies in the online music market, said, "There should be clear lines around the content, and when these are crossed, we must take action. It is critical thinking and open discussion that provides real and necessary progress when we take a broader view of the subject. "The $100 million we've allocated to creators is the same amount we paid Joe Rogan."
As it will be remembered, Spotify came to the fore with an ongoing discussion on the platform in the past few days. Canadian composer, songwriter, and singer Neil Young recently published an article asking Spotify to remove their music. The reason was that he did not want to be on the same platform with another singer, Joe Rogan, due to his statements about Covid-19 and vaccines.
Neil Young accused Joe Rogan of misleading the public and spreading misinformation about vaccines. Spotify signed a podcast contract with Joe Rogan in 2020. As a result of this discussion, Spotify chose Joe Rogan instead of Neil Young and started removing Young's music from the platform at his request. Neil Young accused him of insufficiently moderating the platform's content and supporting Rogan. Despite this, the popular streaming service stated that it has removed more than 20,000 podcast episodes related to the pandemic since the onset of Covid. In a video he uploaded to Instagram, musician Joe Rogan, the name at the center of the controversy, posted a video with a message of apology for bringing Spotify to the fore on a topic related to the pandemic.
Meanwhile, Apple did not sit idle. The company, which is seriously against false information about Covid-19, featured Neil Young's content on Apple Music this week. The company even shared custom playlists by sending notifications to phones.
According to the latest data from Spotify, the company has more than 172 million paid subscribers, and the number of active users has reached 381 million per month.
