34 Million Jobs Have Been Lost In Latin America
In Latin America, according to the International Labor Organization at least 34 million jobs have been lost as a result of coronavirus pandemic.
This is a worse estimate than at the beginning of August, when an estimated 14 million people lost their jobs in Latin America due to a pandemic.
The organization, a specialized UN agency, has called on countries in the region to adopt "immediate strategies" to address the problem.
Latin American and Caribbean Director Vinicius Pinheiro called job losses an "unprecedented problem." The figures are based on information from nine countries, which account for 80 percent of the region's workforce.
Latin America and the Caribbean are the worst affected regions in the world in terms of declining hours worked.
In the first to third quarters of this year, the number of hours worked in the region fell by 20.9 percent, while the global decline was on average at 11.7 percent.
