A Sign Of Relaxation In The Gas Dispute

In the dispute with Greece over gas reserves in the eastern Mediterranean, Turkey withdrew its research vessel "Oruc Reis" from the sea area claimed by both countries. The return of the ship to the waters off the Turkish coast is a first positive step, said Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. However, the Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar insisted on his country's claims to the sea areas. The fact that the "Oruc Reis" has returned near the Turkish south coast does not mean that Turkey has given up its claims. Rather, there are "planned movements back and forth".

Dispute over gas reserves in the Mediterranean

Turkey is exploring oil and gas exploration opportunities in the eastern Mediterranean. These are areas that are also claimed by Greece and Cyprus. The use of the "Oruc Reis" had increased tensions between the two NATO states Greece and Turkey. Both states sent warships to the area in which the research vessel was conducting seismic surveys. NATO intervened in the conflict and organized talks between the armed forces of the two countries in order to avoid an armed conflict. Greece announced the purchase of new warplanes, warships and other weapons on Saturday.

Both states want to talk - and set conditions

Mitsotakis said the dispute with Turkey must be resolved through dialogue. He is ready to resume talks about possible oil and gas reserves. "If we see signs of de-escalation in practice, I will be the first to sit down at the negotiating table." Akar made a similar statement: Turkey has always behaved in the interests of good neighborly relations and expects the same from the other side. Turkey supports peace and dialogue "if our wishes and demands are met".
