Abbott announces reopening of Michigan infant formula plant
Abbott Laboratories (NYSE:ABT) has reopened its Sturgis, Michigan infant formula plant, which was closed last month due to heavy rains, a company spokesperson told Reuters on Saturday.
Abbott resumed operations on July 1 and began production of its specialty infant formula EleCare.
The company, which has been at the center of the infant formula shortage in
the US, closed the plant and recalled infant formula products, including Similac, in February after reports of bacterial infections in infants who consumed products made at the plant.
Before the recall, the company controlled 40% of the infant formula market. The plant closure led to a nationwide shortage of infant formula.
Abbott briefly reopened the plant early last month but was forced to close it about two weeks later due to storms and heavy rains.
