The largest automaker in the United States stated that site preparations at the 2.8 million square foot facility will begin this summer and production facilities are planned to open in 2024.
The company announced that this investment will create employment for 4,000 people. General Motors' investment in four facilities is expected to significantly increase its electric vehicle production capacity in the USA.
As part of the investment, General Motors (GM) plans to establish two battery manufacturing facilities with LG Energy in Ohio and Tennessee. If the battery manufacturing facility is operating at full capacity, it is expected to have an installed capacity of 50 gigawatt-hours. General Motors' production target in North America by the end of 2025 is 1 million electric vehicles.
The state of Michigan provides $824 million in economic stimulus to GM. The company also announced that it aims to phase out gasoline vehicle production by 2035, in line with its goal of reducing carbon emissions.
The company's electric pickup class vehicles are expected to rival fully electric Ford vehicles and Rivian.
