Beirut Explosion Caused Physical Damage Between $ 3.8 Billion And $ 4.6 Billion
The World Bank Group reportedly carried out rapid damage and needs assessment in collaboration with ministries and non-governmental organizations in Lebanon, with the United Nations (UN) and the European Union (EU) to guide the urgently needed global response. The statement stated that the Beirut explosion caused physical damage between $ 3.8 billion and $ 4.6 billion, according to preliminary evaluations.
It was stated that the explosion caused an estimated economic loss between $ 2.9 billion and $ 3.5 billion, and it was noted that housing, transportation and cultural assets were among the most severely affected sectors.
In the statement, it was pointed out that decisive actions are required for the rebuilding of Lebanon, and it was emphasized that international aid and private investments are important for a comprehensive recovery and structuring, given the economic situation of the country.
In the Port of Beirut, on August 4, a fire broke out in the warehouse number 12, where explosives were found, and then a very powerful explosion took place that shook the whole city.
Lebanese President Michel Aoun had said that the explosion was caused by 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate kept in a warehouse at the port for 6 years. It was announced that 182 people died in the explosion, approximately 6 thousand people were injured and dozens of people were missing.
