Political parties forming the federal government in Belgium agreed on the measures to be taken against the rising energy prices in the country.

Accordingly, the VAT rate on electricity bills will be temporarily reduced. In Belgium, the VAT rate applied to electricity will be reduced from 21 percent to 6 percent for the period of 1 March-1 July. In this way, the electricity bills of the households will be reduced by an average of 60 euros.

In addition, a 100 Euro warming check will be sent to the households. This check can be used to pay energy bills.

The duration of favorable energy tariffs provided to poor and low-income families in the country will also be extended.

The government will allocate 1.1 billion euros for the package in question. With the package, the energy bills of households will be reduced by an average of 165 euros.

Inflation in Belgium reached 7.59 percent in January, the highest level measured since 1983.

It was determined that the biggest trigger factor for the increase in inflation in the country was the rise in energy prices.

Compared to a year ago, electricity prices in Belgium increased by 70.8 percent, natural gas prices increased by 153.7 percent, and heating oil increased by 47.1 percent.
