BMW: Pilot cars will come in 2022
With the support of politicians, the automotive industry is currently relying primarily on electric drives. An alternative could be added in the future: hydrogen fuel cell technology. BMW boss Zipse does not expect marketable models so soon.Despite the Federal Government's new hydrogen strategy, BMW boss Oliver Zipse still sees a long way to go for such drives in cars. "Depending on how the framework conditions develop, hydrogen fuel cell technology has the potential to become another pillar in the BMW Group's drive portfolio," said Zipse during a visit by Federal Minister of Economics Peter Altmaier to the group's research center in Garching near Munich.
In November 2022, BMW wanted to launch a pilot series with hydrogen drive on the streets, Zipse confirmed. However, BMW does not expect marketable vehicles until the second half of the decade at the earliest. In the opinion of the BMW boss, there is above all a corresponding network of petrol stations: "For road traffic, an expansion of the tank infrastructure is now necessary, which takes into account the needs of both commercial vehicles and cars."
"What we have learned in the past two years is that we have to do it together,"
Zipse and Altmaier emphasized the willingness to pull together to help hydrogen make a breakthrough as a climate-friendly energy source. said Altmaier, referring to the cooperation between politics and industry in the expansion of hydrogen technology. The federal government decided in June on a hydrogen strategy for the production and use of the fuel. Germany should become the world leader in this field. BMW has been dealing with hydrogen drives for two decades and has now also cooperated with the Japanese car manufacturer Toyota.
