Brexit has made it difficult for cheese producers in England

Much has already been described that Brexit has complicated deliveries across the English Channel. The cheese maker The Cheshire Cheese Company has recently joined those affected by bureaucracy. The company from England, which for years supplied its cheeses directly to customers in the European Union (EU), claims that this is no longer possible due to Brexit. It is therefore considering investing in France. Last year, Cheshire Cheese sold £ 180,000 (€ 205,121.19) in cheese in the EU. London and Brussels did not conclude a mutual trade agreement until last December, at the last minute. Although the agreement averted customs duties at the borders, it put new trade barriers in the way of many, especially smaller companies, which, according to them, "kill their business". For example, Spurrell can no longer sell approximately £ 25 cheese gift boxes in the EU through its online store, as each consignment must be accompanied by a health certificate signed by a veterinarian. And it costs GBP 180 per shipment, regardless of its size. Its company therefore suspended plans for a new distribution center for around GBP 1 million in Macclesfield in the north of England. Instead, it is considering setting up its own distribution center in France, where it could continue to transport goods on a wholesale basis. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson claimed that Britain would trade freely around the world as soon as it "got rid of the EU's shackles". And he called the bureaucratic complications "initial difficulties." But for many island companies that have built their markets in the world's largest trading bloc during their 47-year membership, new relationships have hit sales hard and put pressure on jobs and investment. Smaller companies feel the most, from specialized food and footwear manufacturers to fishermen whose catches are perishable. The Cheshire Cheese Company sells a type of cheese for which there are records more than 400 years old. The company has invested in multilingual websites in the past, which helped it increase sales in the European market by 40% last year. Spurrell lacks an exemption from expensive certificates for direct sales to consumers. According to it, the teams of negotiators overlooked it because they were in a hurry to reach an agreement. It contacted the relevant authorities and called on them to resolve the issues. But time is running out and many small businesses may not be able to recover.
