Britain wants to tax companies that have profited from the pandemic
The UK plans to tax vendors and technology companies, whose profits have risen sharply during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Referring to the Sunday Times, which has leaked e-mails, Reuters reported.
The government has invited companies to discuss how the new online sales tax should work. At the same time, however, it is also working on a one-off tax on excessive profits.
According to Reuters, it is unlikely that Finance Minister
Rishi Sunak will announce a new tax at the presentation of the budget on March 3, where he will focus mainly on extending pandemic support for companies. The new tax will probably not be announced until the second half of the year.
Sunak is currently under pressure from the Conservative Party to demonstrate control over spending, as government debt in the new budget is heading for its highest levels since World War II.
The minister promised to get public finances under control when the economy begins to recover. January data showed that government debt had reached a record £ 271 billion (€ 309.58 billion) since the start of the financial year (April 2020).
The
British Treasury has not yet commented on the Sunday Times.
