“CAATSA Sanctions on Turkey Are Just a Start”
In an analysis published in The New York Times, “
CAATSA sanctions on Turkey are just a start...” statements took place.
Democratic Party candidate Joe Biden, who won the US presidential election against his rival Donald Trump in November, will soon take over. While Biden, who will take office on January 20, is counting the days, the US press is talking about the issues that Biden will be interested in after taking over the presidency.
These issues include Donald Trump's sanction against Turkey for the S-400 missiles within the scope of
Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA).
The New York Times, one of the most important newspapers of the USA, published an article called “The World is Full of Challenges. Here's Biden's Way to Cope With Them”. Article had the signature of former US Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates, also mentioned relations with Turkey.
S-400s Should Have a Price
Gates stated that the elected president of the USA, Joe Biden, has three main elements in foreign policy. These three main elements were counted as reconnecting with friends and allies of the United States, rejoining international organizations and focusing on non-military power instruments.
In the article, it was said that “there should be a price for the S-400s Turkey purchased from Russia”, it was emphasized that this sanction was imposed after the warnings from the USA. In the article where the sanctions were said to be a good start, the words that “this should be followed” were used.
In addition, the following statements were included in the article:
"The Ankara administration should also be held responsible for its actions in Libya, the Eastern Mediterranean and Syria, which violate the rights of other NATO members and complicate peace efforts. A member who creates actions according to the interests of his allies cannot be ignored."
It was emphasized, while it was alleged that authoritarianism in countries such as Turkey, Hungary and Poland is increased, US should take leadership in NATO and it should put forward a creative example of diplomacy. On the other hand, it was emphasized that although there is no such thing as excluding Turkey from NATO, ways such as suspension of membership can be used.
