Canadian Citizen Arrested for Cryptocurrency Theft
A Canadian citizen has been arrested for cryptocurrency theft. It was alleged that the citizen stole 36.5 million dollars worth of cryptocurrency.
A Canadian teenager was recently arrested for allegedly stealing around $36.5 million worth of cryptocurrencies from a single person in the US. This event once again sparked the discussion about the security of
cryptocurrencies, revealing that people with large amounts of money in cryptocurrencies are easily targeted.
In the statements made by the police, the incident was described as “the largest cryptocurrency theft by a single person”.
According to the statements, in the incident that took place last year, the Canadian teenager stole the American victim's cryptocurrencies with the SIM Swap method. Thanks to this method, which allows your phone number to be transferred to another phone, the victim's phone was accessed. After that, two-factor authentication requests were blocked and accounts with $36.5 million worth of cryptocurrencies were found.
Canadian authorities, working with the
FBI and the US secret service, located and apprehended the teenager who was determined to have bought a very valuable and 'rare' username in an online game with some of the money. It was noted that around $5.5 million in cryptocurrencies were confiscated after the arrest. No details were given about the identity of the arrested youth.
Experts say that people should be careful because the probability of facing 'crypto fraud' is higher than expected.
