Chip Supply Chain-White House Held a Virtual Summit to Discuss Chip Supply Chain! Top executives from companies such as Google's parent company Alphabet, AT&T, Intel and General Motors gathered at the White House yesterday for a virtual summit addressing the global semiconductor shortage. At the summit, which emerged as the Biden administration started to review important US supply chains; Chip shortages were discussed, involving a range of industries, from electric vehicle manufacturing to medical supplies. Automakers such as GM and Ford have recently had to reduce production estimates or extend downtime to deal with chip shortages. Since most of the chips in the world are produced in Asia, where the crisis first hit, the supply chain was disrupted from the very beginning with the Covid-19 outbreak. US officials and lawmakers highlighted the possible safety implications of the country's dependence on other countries for semiconductors. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said in a speech in February that semiconductor manufacturing is a dangerous weakness for the US economy and national security.
