Common Coronavirus Statement by the World Bank and IMF
The World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) have announced their readiness to assist member states struggling with humanitarian and economic challenges caused by the Coronavirus outbreak.
World Bank President David Malpass and IMF chief Kristalina Georgieva made a joint written statement on the Covid-19 outbreak.
"The IMF and the World Bank Group are ready to assist our member states in dealing with the human tragedy and economic challenges caused by the Kovid-19 virus," she said in a statement, noting that active communication has been made with international organizations and country officials."
"We will use as much of our existing tools as possible, including emergency funding, policy advice, and technical assistance," the statement said, noting that special attention is being paid to poor countries where the health system is weak. In particular, we have fast financing opportunities that can meet the needs of a large number of countries. Strengthening the country's health surveillance and intervention systems is crucial to bringing this and any future outbreak under control. International cooperation is vital to dealing with the medical and economic effects of the Kovid-19 virus. The IMF and the World Bank Group are fully committed to providing the support that people in our member states expect from us."
