Competition and fisheries rules are the main obstacles to managed Brexit
A number of important issues remain open in the ongoing trade negotiations between the United Kingdom and the European Union.
This was stated by Valdis Dombrovskis, Vice-President of the
European Commission.
According to him, the parties still have a lot of work to do if the full agreement is to enter into force on 1 January.
The talks could still last for many days, Dombrovskis said. He cooled the expectations that the agreement could be brought by Thursday's video conference of
EU leaders.
"We have seen many deadlines. However, there is one that cannot be postponed, and that is January 1 next year, when the transitional period ends, "said Dombrovskis.
The United Kingdom formally left the Union in January. The Brexite Agreement includes a transitional period of eleven months to allow both parties time to conclude an agreement on future trade relations. However, negotiations have stalled in recent months.
The main obstacles to reaching an agreement include the issue of guarantees of fair competition, especially as regards state aid rules, but also reciprocal fishing rights, which is a symbolic sector for Brexit supporters.
