Congress extended the fiscal year by another two days, tentatively preventing a shutdown
The US Congress approved an extension of the current fiscal year.
For the time being, The Congress prevented the partial cessation of funding for federal offices, the so-called shutdown. Republicans and
Democrats have not yet agreed on a new budget law.
The situation is also complicated by the fact that a new package of assistance to companies and households affected by the
coronavirus crisis is being negotiated in parallel.
The fiscal year in the US actually ended at the end of September. Congress first extended the current financial year until December 11. The move was to give both parties enough time to negotiate a new budget after the country's presidential elections on November 3.
However, no solution was found by the deadline and the legislators approved a further postponement of the end of the budget year to midnight from Friday to Saturday.
The latest postponement was passed by Congress late Friday night at almost the last minute.
