Coronavirus May Make 395 Million People More Poor!

In a statement by the United Nations University Institute of World Economic Research Promotion (UNU-WIDER), the coronavirus epidemic can make people more impoverished. UNU-WIDER's research on the coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak; The report titled "Insecurity and Epidemic: Kovid-19 and Poverty Effect, Intensity and Difficulty in Developing Countries" was published. In this report, it was pointed out that the number of people with an income of less than $ 1.90 per day may increase due to the coronavirus outbreak. This rate is described as the extreme poverty line. In the worst scenario, based on a 20 percent reduction in per capita income or consumption, statements were made that 395 million people could be pushed to the extreme poverty line. If these estimates are realized, the number of extremely poor people worldwide can reach 1.12 billion. The report emphasized the importance of the number of poor people rising to 3.7 billion, based on the number of people earning less than $ 5.50 per day; It was stated that the balance sheet of the coronavirus crisis for the poor was 500 million dollars of income loss per day. In the report, which pointed out that global poverty may differ in terms of geographical distribution, the increase in the number of extreme poor is said to be seen in 'developing' countries in East and South Asia.
"Millions of people live in a dangerous position, a shock away from poverty."
Sumner, who pointed out that the main effects of the coronavirus outbreak (Covid-19) on the poor will be determined by the measures taken by governments to prevent the crisis, said: "We have a three-phase plan, but global leadership is urgently needed in this regard. The world's poorest cannot expect the G7 to convene in September or the G20 to convene in November." Stating that if the governments do not hold up quickly, hopes for the extreme poor will be exhausted, Sumner said, "The progress in poverty reduction can go back 20-30 years."
