Decision to Continue Brexit Negotiations
Decision to continue the
Brexit negotiations. The two sides took one last step towards reaching an agreement.
The Brexit talks, in which the tension has been falling and rising, for a long time, entered a new impasse on Friday. Brexit negotiations were paused last Friday due to fair competition, how to resolve trade disputes, and lack of agreement on fishing issues.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reported that they instructed negotiators to continue negotiations as a final attempt to resolve disputes.
In the joint statement of Johnson and von der Leyen, the following statements were made:
“The two sides agreed that the negotiating teams should do more to assess whether the disputes can be resolved. That is why we are ordering our chief negotiators to meet again in Brussels tomorrow. We will speak again on Monday evening.”
Besides, one of the most problematic issues came up. Clement Beaune, Minister of State for European Affairs of France, made a statement to the Journal de Dimanche about the fishing problem. Beaune said , "We know the days of full access to fish quotas in British territorial waters are over. But we must have broad and permanent Access."
On the other hand, George Eustice told Sky News that the EU insisted on "unlimited access" to British waters.
At their request, effective access to our waters is guaranteed forever. This is against international law. Such a proposal is really absurd. We cannot allow the EU to have long-term access to our waters.
Eustice continued as follows:
"There was some hope in the talks last week. There was some progress. Later the
EU made a bunch of additional demands that caused some problems. The negotiations are now in a very difficult situation. We will continue the negotiations until there is no meaning."
