Atlanta-based airline Delta Airlines announced that there was a loss of 408 million dollars in the last quarter of 2021, when many flights were canceled due to the Omikron variant, and there was no profit expectation in the first quarter of the new year.
The company predicted that by 2022 costs will increase sharply, fuel expenses will be 15 percent more than in 2019.
Delta Airlines Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Ed Bastian, stated that eight thousand employees have caught Covid-19 in the last four weeks. And said, "Sick workers and winter conditions have caused more than 2,200 flights to be canceled since December 24."
Bastian stated that the number of people flying in the USA decreased by 20 percent compared to January 2019, and the passenger loss rate was around 16 percent in November and December. The Atlanta company reported that only in the spring months, the planes will start to fill up and they can enter a profitable period.
At the beginning of the week, CEO Scott Kirby announced that 3 thousand employees were caught in Covid-19 in a letter he sent to the employees of the institution.
In a single day at Newark Liberty International Airport, nearly a third of United's staff tested positive for Covid-19. The airline suspended scheduled flights.
Both airlines have approximately 74,000 employees.
