Deutsche Bahn Is Modernizing Its Internet Offering

Deutsche Bahn is modernizing its Internet offering for travelers and has introduced a coherent WiFi network for trains and stations: As the group announced, customers can now access the free network in all ICE trains, over 100 stations and around 200 regional trains and buses Dial in with the name WIFI @ DB - and then continue surfing seamlessly and unlimitedly at every supported location. "For the first time, travelers are surfing with a high bandwidth, unlimited in time and free of charge," explained Deutsche Bahn. According to technical director Sabina Jeschke, the new network brings "more comfort for commuters and business travelers who can surf the web continuously on the train, at the station and in the DB Lounge and do not have to log in again for the return journey". Passengers' smartphones, laptops or tablets automatically connect to the nearest WiFi antenna, as Deutsche Bahn explained. According to the group, a total of over 130 station buildings should be connected by the end of the year; That alone would cost 44 million euros. Other locations, including IC and regional trains and buses, are to follow gradually. In the meantime, there is no guarantee that rail customers will not only be able to surf the web with WIFI @ DB without any problems in connected train stations, but also during the journey themselves. In the ICE, for example, WiFi has been available across the board since 2017 - but disruptions on the way remain a nuisance for many travelers. The decisive factor for stable surfing on the train is sufficient cellular coverage along the railway lines, as Deutsche Bahn emphasized. The group pointed out that the expansion here is "the responsibility of the mobile phone providers" who, according to the Federal Network Agency's instructions, would have to supply all rail routes with mobile phone by 2024.
