McDonald’s is facing a shortage of paper bags

As restaurants struggle to recover from the pandemic, new issues are constantly emerging that some need to address. According to a July McDonald’s report, the fast food chain is facing a shortage of paper bags and pouches worldwide. It encourages franchisees to reduce their consumption during serving and subsequent consumption in the restaurant. The report calls on branches to keep the consumption of packaging material, especially paper bags and sacks, to a minimum. "A simple solution may be to limit the use of bags, especially during restaurant serving," he adds. During the pandemic, customers used to order food more often than before at home or to come to the restaurant by car on a so-called drive. The company states that over the past period, however, it continues to see growing customer interest in McDelivery and McDrive services. Despite this problem, McDonald’s argues that the impact on restaurants should be minimal. "Based on what we know today, we believe that customers should not experience disruptions in the supply of bags or straws. We will continue to monitor the situation closely, "the company said. In the past year, most American restaurants across the country (nearly 81 percent) have seen growing orders for takeaway or home delivery, which has required higher consumption of paper bags and pouches. According to NPD Group, a consumer research company, this is 18 percent more than in the previous year. On Wednesday, the KFC fast food chain also announced problems with some items that are currently missing in European restaurants. The statement does not state which items of the menu apply to it, nor the reason for the outage. It said the situation was "not ideal" and that "they are working hard to make things run smoothly". The majority (80 percent) of KFC's operations are operated on a franchise basis.
