New York City Museum Steps into the Metaverse!
The Manhattan-based history and art museum has filed several patent applications related to NFTs. The Museum of the City of New York has filed several Web3-related patents with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. In addition, the New York City Museum wants to make a name for itself in the Metaverse using NFTs and crypto.
Founded in 1923, the Manhattan-based history and art museum aims to create downloadable cryptocurrency collections, non-fungible tokens and app tokens. The museum has six curated departments focusing on photography, theater, decorative arts, costume, painting and sculpture. According to the trademark application submitted to the USPTO, the museum will engage in multiple ventures. As far as is known, virtual goods, NFTs and collections are their first priority. Also planned are crypto collectibles and application tokens used and transferred in software as a service (SaaS). The news was shared by trademark attorney Michael Kondoudis on Twitter.
NFTs started to grow in popularity last year. With this, many museums have moved to capitalize on the craze. This is not the first time a museum has ventured into Web3. In May, Dubai's Museum of the Future announced its first NFT collection. This collection is called 'Metaverse of the Best' NFTs. For its launch, Binance announced a partnership with the NFT marketplace. Likewise, Luckmon announced a collaboration with the Morrowbogi and Chamsori Gramophone Museum and the Edison Museum of Science to establish a unique NFT initiative involving physical ownership of a historical innovation by American Icon Thomas Edison.
The Vienna-based Belvedere museum created and launched an NFT collection of Austrian symbolist painter Gustav Klimt's famous work 'Kiss' ahead of Valentine's Day. Last September, the British Museum launched its digital Hokusai postcard collection. In this context, it entered the NFT field by teaming up with the newly established LaCollection. Also last May, the first NFT museum opened in Seattle to pull back the curtain on digital art. In mid-July, an NFT gallery was realized in Midtown Manhattan, New York's main commercial and retail district. The initiative has also made it possible for creators to showcase their digital art from anywhere in the world.
