In the US, Toyota overtook General Motors (
GM) as the brand that sold the most vehicles last year, for the first time since 1931. That's just because Toyota is handling supply chain woes and the chip crisis better than
GM.
General Motors (
GM) announced that they sold 2.2 million vehicles in 2021. This represents a 12.9 percent decrease from the previous year. Toyota, on the other hand, increased its sales by 10.4 percent to 2.3 million in 2021 compared to the previous year.
"We surpassed General Motors (
GM)," Jack Hollis, vice president of Toyota North America Automotive, told reporters about their leadership. And added, "However, this is not our goal. We do not see this as a sustainable situation."
Since 1931, General Motors (
GM) has maintained its position as the largest vehicle sales brand in the United States. Shares of the company climbed to a 52-week high yesterday at $65.98 per share after it announced that the chip crisis would ease in time.
General Motors (
GM) North America President Stevie Carlisle said, "We plan to turn the strengthening of the economy in our favor in 2022 and increase our sales and
market share with the reduction of the chip crisis."
