Ukraine and Russia what you need to know right now

Shots fired at the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine raise fears of disaster; both sides blame each other for the attacks.

ZAPORIZHZHIA

Ukraine's state nuclear company Energoatom said on Saturday that Russian troops had again shelled the grounds of the Zaporizhzhia power plant in the past 24 hours and that damage was being assessed. Russia's defense ministry on Saturday accused Ukrainian forces of shelling the complex three times in 24 hours. Four shells hit the roof of a building storing "168 US Westinghouse nuclear fuel assemblies," the ministry said.

CONFLICT

It is not yet clear how Russia will carry out its announced major increase in its armed forces, but it is unlikely to significantly increase its combat power in Ukraine, the UK Defense Ministry said. The Ukrainian mayor of occupied Melitopol told Ukrainian television that the government shelled the Russian military base in the city on Saturday night. "According to preliminary information ... One of the largest military bases located in the city of Melitopol was also damaged and partially demilitarized"

ECONOMY

Six ships loaded with food have left the Ukrainian port of Odessa, regional administration spokesman Serhiy Bratchuk said on the Telegram app. Millions of tons of food left over from previous harvests in Ukraine need to be cleared to make room in silos for the next harvest, the UN coordinator of a key grain export deal said on Saturday. Ukraine's prime minister said on Saturday that sailors will be allowed to leave Ukraine if they get approval from local military administrative bodies, which could ease the process of grain shipments. Germany may nationalize the energy business that Russia's Gazprom (MCX:GAZP) abandoned in April. The government has set up a holding company to handle a possible nationalization of Gazprom Germania, Welt am Sonntag reported. Dell Technologies (NYSE:DELL), a major server supplier in Russia, announced on Saturday that it has ceased all operations in Russia after closing its offices in mid-August.
