Wikipedia Makes a Surprising Crypto Decision
The Wikimedia Foundation made a surprising crypto decision, known for the nonprofit internet encyclopedia Wikipedia, Wikimedia has announced that it will no longer accept crypto donations.
Surprising Crypto Decision from Wikipedia. The Wikimedia Foundation, which has been accepting donations in cryptocurrencies since 2014, announced that it will no longer accept donations in crypto.
Crypto Donations are Risky
Sources close to the matter said that although the foundation closed its
Bitpay account, the issue is still open to discussion.
It was Wikipedia editor GorillaWarefare (Molly White) who initiated the crypto discussions at the foundation. Molly White stated that crypto donations are incredibly risky investments and that these donations go against the foundation's sustainability missions. Many Wikipedia editors supported this idea, stating that the Mozilla Foundation, which stopped Bitcoin donations, inspired White.
As a result of the foundation voting on White's proposal; 232 voted to block crypto donations and 94 voted to continue crypto donations.
Wikimedia announced that they will continue to evaluate the situation and will be flexible throughout this process.
