President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated that Turkey continues its determined stance on the European Union (EU) membership. Regarding the issue, President Erdogan said, "Despite the double standards and obstacles it is exposed to, Turkey continues its decisive attitude and efforts towards EU membership, which is its strategic goal." Erdogan said, "It is obvious that the Union cannot maintain its strong existence without the contribution and support of our country." and noted that the EU needs a new institutional structure, a new vision, and a new encompassing discourse, in particular to review the decision-making mechanisms.
