Ethereum blockchain and the founder of the WikiScanner indexing platform, was sentenced to 5 years for breaking the embargoes.
There have been criticisms that cryptocurrencies have been used for years for illegal purposes such as money laundering and avoiding the embargoes we witnessed especially in the Russian invasion. Law enforcement is very sensitive about these issues.
Virgil Griffith, who has worked on the Ethereum network for years and is the founder of the WikiScanner platform, was detained in the USA in 2019 after a speech he gave in Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea.
Griffith was sentenced to a total of 63 months in prison on charges of making recommendations on cryptocurrencies to circumvent embargoes. He will also pay $100,000 in compensation. There is a 14-month bail period within the 2-year detention period. The remaining 10 months will be counted by doubling as it passed under difficult conditions.
