EU IS THINKING ABOUT SANCTIONS AGAINST TURKEY

Foreign ministers of the 27 member states of the European Union gathered in Brussels. At the meeting, due to drilling activities in the Eastern Mediterranean, it was told that EU is thinking about sanctions against Turkey. “We are going to support a path that will contribute to lower tensions. And for sure, drilling in the disputed waters in Greece could be something that will increase tensions. At the same time, we will prepare options on further appropriate measures that could be taken in response to the challenges that we are facing by result of Turkish actions.”  said European Union Minister for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell.

Last February, The EU added two managers of Turkey Petroleum Corporation (TPAO) to the sanctions list due to drilling operations off the coast of Cyprus. In this context, it was decided to freeze the assets of two TPAO administrators in the EU. Borrell added that the foreign ministers have not yet made a decision on the issue at the meeting today and that the issue will be reconsidered at the next meeting. The next meeting of EU foreign ministers will be held in Berlin, Germany's capital next month.

EU CONDEMNATION OF HAGIA SOPHIA

At the meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels, the decision to turn Hagia Sophia into a mosque was also discussed. "An important issue was about Hagia Sophia. The council has condemned Turkey's decision to convert such an emblematic monument as Hagia Sophia back to a mosque. This decision will inevitably fuel mistrust, promote renewed division between religious communities and undermine our efforts at dialogue and cooperation", Josep Borrell told during the press conference. Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg “We deeply regret the current decision of Turkey to turn Hagia Sophia into a mosque and we cannot understand this! Eliminating the status of a museum open to all cultures and religions is another step away from Europe!”, said.
