European Football's Loss in Pandemic Announced
European football’s loss in the pandemic has been announced. It was stated that the loss could reach 9 billion Euros.
UEFA stated that the economic damage caused by the coronavirus (Covid-19) epidemic in European football will be close to 9 billion Euros. According to the report on UEFA's website, clubs across Europe suffered huge financial losses in the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 seasons.
In these two seasons, which were in the grip of the coronavirus epidemic, the clubs' most match days, sponsorship and broadcast revenues decreased.
It was reported that 7.2 billion Euros in the primary leagues and 1.5 billion Euros in the lower leagues will be damaged due to the epidemic. It was announced that transfer expenditures in
Europe decreased by 39 percent in the summer of 2020 compared to the previous year and 56 percent in the interim transfer period of 2021.
Speaking in the report, UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin stated that football is facing the biggest challenge in modern times, said, "This report proves that we are currently operating in a new financial reality. It is clear that the current Financial Fair Play regulations will need to be updated."
Underlining that the principle of financial sustainability will remain its goals, Ceferin said, "UEFA and European football will work as a team to equip our sport with new rules for a new future."
