The Hazelnut Agricultural Sales Cooperatives Union (FISKOBIRLIK) stated that the geographical indication registered for Giresun plump hazelnut will also be protected in EU member countries.
In the written statement made by FISKOBIRLIK, it was noted that Giresun plump hazelnut was registered in 2001 by the Turkish Trademark and Patent Office with the application of FISKOBIRLIK.
In the statement, which stated that an EU registration application was made to the General Directorate of Agriculture and Rural Development of the European Union Commission in 2018, the European Parliament and the Council decided to publish it as of February 10, 2022. After the publication decision, which will last for three months, Giresun plump hazelnut will be under protection in all European Union countries.
Lütfi Bayraktar, Chairman of the Board of FISKOBIRLIK, whose evaluations were included in the statement, drew attention to the importance of geographically indicated products both in exports and in the domestic market.
Emphasizing that as FISKOBIRLIK, they will resolutely continue to add value to Giresun and Giresun hazelnuts, Bayraktar continued: "The interest in products with geographical indications has increased considerably in our country and in the world. Efficiency, sustainability, and traceability have become the most important elements of the food industry. In this direction, products with geographical indications are of great importance. It is important. As FISKOBIRLIK, we act with the awareness of this and continue our work."
Stating that FISKOBIRLIK has protected Giresun plump, pointed and black hazelnuts, as well as Giresun hazelnut paste with geographical indication registration, Bayraktar said: "Now, Giresun plump hazelnut will be protected against all kinds of abuse, imitation and association in European Union countries. I would like to thank those who contributed. May it be beneficial to Giresun and our producers."
As of now, Turkey has 7 products that have received geographical indication registration from the EU. These products are Gaziantep baklava, Aydın fig, Malatya apricot, Kastamonu Taşköprü garlic, Aydın chestnut, Milas olive oil, and Bayramiç white. With the completion of the Giresun plump hazelnut registration process, the number of products that have received geographical indication registration from the EU will increase to eight.
