Guterres: The International Community Is Failing To Fight Covid-19
"More than a million people have died and more than 30 million more have been infected because there has not been enough coordination between states in the fight against the virus," Guterres said. According to him, the coronavirus represents a great challenge for the international community. "Unfortunately, the international community is failing in it so far," he said.
According to Johns Hopkins University, the number of coronavirus infections worldwide has risen to 39.6 million, and 1.1 million people have died from covid-19.
"If we do not adopt strong and coordinated solutions, a microscopic virus could plunge millions of people into hunger and poverty, with devastating economic consequences," Guterres warned.
According to the Secretary-General, the
coronavirus epidemic is a "warning signal" for other areas where cooperation and coordination between the international community is insufficient. These include climate change and the fight against terrorism and organized crime.
António Guterres, a native of Lisbon, became UN Secretary-General in January 2017. His term will expire at the end of next year.
