Speaking about the coronavirus epidemic,
European Central Bank President Lagarde said, "The increase in virus cases is a clear risk for the economy".
European Central Bank (
ECB) President Christine Lagarde stated that the increase in cases in the coronavirus outbreak is very risky in terms of the economic outlook. This indicates that policy makers are preparing for more monetary incentives.
“Many scientists in the Eurozone expected the epidemic to rise in November or December with the cold weather," Lagarde said in an interview with the LCI from France on Tuesday. Stating that the increase in the number of cases occurred surprisingly earlier than expected. Said, "This is not a good sign."
Speaking to RTL from Germany ahead of Lagarde's statements, EMB chief economist Philip Lane said, "The virus can still be contained, but if it is not, we must prepare for the worst-case scenarios."
The Governing Council of the European Central Bank will meet next week for a monetary policy meeting. Most economists and investors estimate that the bank will remain on hold until December before expanding its outbreak bond purchase program of 1.35 trillion euro.
