Intel Loses Its Market Share to AMD!

Shares of chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) have been on the decline since they reported fourth quarter results at the end of January. With the fall of stocks, some investors may be wondering: Are AMD stocks currently in a purchasable situation? AMD has made an incredible return over the past five years, backed by new products it has acquired and its increased profitability. As a result, AMD shares were on the rise. AMD competes with Intel (INTC) in building central processing units (CPUs) for personal computers and servers. It also rivals Nvidia (NVDA) in the graphics processing units (GPU) market for computers, game consoles, and data centers. Founded in May 1969, AMD went public in September 1972. AMD moved into the semiconductor business in March 2009, dividing its factories into a joint venture called GlobalFoundries.   CEO Lisa Su Makes a Difference Current Chief Executive Officer Lisa Su took office in October 2014. In 2017, the California-based company moved it into a new era with Ryzen PC processors and Epyc server chips. Under the management of Lisa Su, AMD not only got ahead of Intel in producing CPUs with smaller node sizes, but also gave them an advantage in terms of speed and performance. While AMD produces chips with a scale of 7 nanometers, Intel has difficulty making chips at 10 nanometers. AMD is now developing chips with a scale of 5 nanometers. (Circuit widths in chips are measured in nanometers, which are a billionth of a meter.) On July 23, Intel announced a six-month delay in the production of 7-nanometer processors that were behind schedule. Analysts expect Intel to roll out its first 7-nanometer processors in late 2022 or early 2023. Until then, AMD could be making 3 nanometer processors. This helped AMD gain market share in the computer and server space from Intel. These gains of course contributed directly to the revival of AMD stocks. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSM) manufactures AMD's chips. AMD CEO also manages a potential converter acquisition process. On October 27, AMD announced an all-stock deal worth $ 35 billion to purchase Xilinx (XLNX) to expand its growing data center business. However, AMD stocks fell on the news of the Xilinx acquisition. Critics think the acquisition blurs the clean investor story in terms of AMD's share of earnings in the processor market.

Intel regained CPU market share in desktop and notebook computers from AMD in the fourth quarter, according to Mercury Research. This ended AMD's three-year market share gains in the PC segment on a quarterly basis. AMD had difficulties in sourcing with the contract manufacturer during the same period. AMD's unit share in desktop processor sales fell from 20.1 percent in the third quarter to 19.3 percent. However, it is an increase compared to the previous period (18.3 percent). AMD's unit share in laptop processor sales was 20.2 percent in the September quarter and 19 percent in the December quarter. However, it is an increase compared to the previous period (16.2 percent). However, AMD continued to gain share in the server market (CPU) in the fourth quarter. Server CPU market share in December quarter was 7.1 percent. Mercury said it was an increase of 6.6 percent in the September quarter and 4.5 percent in the previous quarter.   Intel Loses Market Share to AMD!
