Irish Prime Minister: Biden supports Brexite agreement, London should back down
Newly elected US President Joe Biden is interested in concluding a trade agreement between Britain and the European Union, so British Prime Minister Boris Johnson should step down and conclude the agreement.
This was stated in an interview with the BBC by the Irish Prime Minister
Micheál Martin, which was published by the Reuters agency.
According to him, the disagreement will mean enormous damage to Britain and Ireland.
As Martin said, the US, led by
Biden, will do more to promote cooperation at the multilateral level, and Britain should also go in that direction and work with the EU. He added that Biden strongly supported the Good Friday agreement and was not interested in being undermined by a possible Brexit disagreement.
According to Martin, the British government should strive for a trade agreement. "It is extremely important that we reach an agreement," said the Irish Prime Minister. He added that its non-closure would be "devastating" for Britain's economy and Ireland would suffer significantly.
He rejected claims that the European Union had not backed down in trade talks and still believed that an agreement would eventually be reached. "Our economies have experienced a huge shock as a result of the new coronavirus pandemic. The last thing they need now is another severe shock," Martin said.
