Is the Exorbitant Increase in House Rents Coming to an End?
Minister of Justice Bekir Bozdağ made statements about the exorbitant rents that have increased in every part of the country, especially in the west. Stating that they are working on the rental arrangement and noting that the decision will be made not on the amount, but on the rate, Bozdağ said, "I would like to state that the final stage has been reached. This will be a temporary arrangement, let me underline it. We will make a temporary arrangement, not a permanent arrangement." Bozdağ added that they aim to transfer rent disputes to a mediator and resolve disputes with this method.
Stating that they are looking for a formula to prevent exorbitant prices in rents by protecting the law of the landlord and the tenant, Bozdağ reminded that the ministries of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, Justice, Treasury and Finance and Trade are working together on this issue. Minister Bozdağ stated that certain topics were highlighted at the meeting, which he also attended at the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change, and made the following statements about the studies:
"The first topic is what kind of measure can be set between the landlord who will rent for the first time and the tennant, we have instructed a study to be carried out, which protects the rights of both parties. A common formula that protects the rights of both the landlord and the tenant, taking into account what will be the rate of increase for those sitting after the first tennant, what will happen, what will be done, CPI, WPI, other inflation figures. Studies are underway on these subjects. We will make a decision based on the ratio.
Not on quantity. Because we think it would be reasonable to set a rate based on the ratio. When we do it over the ratio, the cost will occur differently according to each amount. I would like to express that we have reached the final stage. This will be a temporary arrangement, let me underline it. We will make a temporary arrangement, not a permanent arrangement. After the deadline, we will continue the old fashion way."
To the question directed at Minister Bozdag "Will it be a variable rate?" he answered with, "Now it will be a fixed rate. Again, the CPI will be taken as a basis, but when we talk about the rate, these numbers are high at the moment. These high numbers will be drawn back to a reasonable rate that will be accepted by all parties."
