Relations between the two countries were damaged by the developments that took place when former US President Donald Trump recognized Jerusalem as the "capital of Israel" on December 6, 2017, when Benjamin Netanyahu, the leader of the Likud Party in Israel, was prime minister.

Due to the events on the Gaza border, Ankara invited Tel Aviv Ambassador Kemal Ökem to Ankara for consultations, and asked the Israeli Ambassador in Ankara, Eitan Naeh, to return to his country for a while. Shortly after, upon the request of the parties, Turkey withdrew Ambassador Gürcan Türkoğlu, Consul General in Jerusalem from Palestine, and Israel withdrew Yosef Levi Sfari, Consul General in Istanbul. Thus, the diplomatic representation between the two countries was reduced to the level of a chargé d'affaires.
After the early elections in Israel on March 23, 2021, the coalition negotiations continued for a long time.
