An administrative fine of 1 million 950 thousand TL was imposed on
WhatsApp by the Personal Data Protection Board (KVKK) for not taking the necessary technical and administrative measures to prevent the unlawful processing of personal data.
Yesterday, the online messaging app
WhatsApp, acquired by Facebook in 2014, was fined $267 million by the Irish Data Protection Commission for failing to provide EU citizens with enough information about what they were doing with their data.
In the statement made by the Irish regulatory agency, it was stated that the WhatsApp application did not provide sufficient information on how Europeans collect and store personal information and data sharing with Facebook.
The agency warned that WhatsApp should review its privacy policy and communications with users and align it with Europe's privacy laws.
