Last Week New Zealand Stock Exchange Was The Target Of Cyberattacks

The New Zealand stock exchange was the target of cyberattacks last week. Due to the attacks carried out for four consecutive days, the stock exchange could be opened with a delay of three hours on Friday. According to the news in the BBC, when the attacks did not stop, the communication security bureau of the country was called for help. The website of the exchange, which has a size of 135 billion dollars, collapsed due to the intensity of the attacks. The authorities are trying to take the necessary measures to avoid the same trouble tomorrow, which is the first day of the week. In the investigations, it was determined that the cyber attacks originated from abroad.

"We Take This Event Very Seriously"

Finance Minister Grant Robertson declined to provide details in his statement. Minister Robertson said, "I cannot share any details other than saying that we, as the government, take this issue very seriously". The statement made by the exchange operator NZX said, "We are experiencing connectivity problems caused by overseas DDoS attacks." DdoS attacks are made by sending requests with a large enough density to crash a website.

The History Of These Attacks Dates Back To November

The history of these attacks on New Zealand dates back to November. Cyber security organization CertNZ stated that in case of ransom payments to financial companies, they will be exposed to DDoS attacks. The source of these was noted to be a well-known Russian hacking group called Fancy Bear. CertNZ emphasized that at that time, 30-minute attacks were made only as a scare tactic, and there was no attempt beyond that. In June, Amazon announced that the largest DDoS attack in history was carried out on the cloud system, which provides infrastructure service to many companies' websites, and it was dodged.
