President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan held a phone conversation with Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson and NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg.
NATO Diplomacy from Erdogan. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan met with Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson and NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg regarding the NATO membership of Sweden and Finland.
In the meeting, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan stated that Turkey has always fully supported NATO's open-door policy and stated that solidarity in the alliance is an essential value in terms of both the security of the member states and the collective.
Emphasizing once again that Turkey is uncomfortable with Sweden's contacts with individuals and so-called organizations under the control of the terrorist organization PKK/YPG/PYD, Erdoğan pointed out that the FETÖ terrorist organization's presence and activities in Sweden also continue.
Immediately afterwards, Erdogan spoke on the phone with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and stated that Turkey sincerely supports NATO's open-door policy, and that the issue regarding Sweden and Finland's membership request is the attitudes of these two countries regarding Turkey's vital national security interests.
According to the statement made by the Presidency's Directorate of Communications, Erdoğan also stated that unless Sweden and Finland clearly show that they will stand in solidarity with Turkey on fundamental issues, especially the fight against terrorism, these countries should not approach their NATO membership positively.
NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg once again stated that Turkey's security concerns should be addressed.
