Netflix Enters the Gaming World. Are Blockchain Games On The Way?

After Mark Zuckerberg's Meta announcement, with the metaverse tide, it was almost unnoticed that Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX) would enter the gaming industry. The concept itself is quite interesting. The online content company has decided to diversify its products and release exclusive games on the platform. Perhaps the ones that deserve the most attention were Stranger Things: 1984 and Stranger Things 3: The Game, which were developed for the fans of the series. These are actually mobile games and therefore they are available on Android and iOS platforms. Nobody expected AAA-level projects because AAA games require huge investments and huge development teams. However, the mobile gaming industry is not as popular today, at least in the West, as it was in 2012. It's possible that Netflix is planning to revive the mobile gaming industry by being one of the biggest content providers we'll see in the near future.

Could Netflix Turn to Blockchain Games?

Theoretically, the idea is solid. Many crypto games are similar to mobile games. These types of games often feature simple visuals and addictive game mechanics. On the other hand, the whole idea of subscription conflicts with the general concept of NFTs. For example, if you subscribe to Xbox Game Pass, you get access to a list of around 500 games, but you don't own any of them, you just pay for a monthly/yearly "access". Sure, you can hypothetically own some objects in the game as NFTs, but without the ecosystem, or at least full-time access to it, it loses most of the functionality. Therefore, such games must be purchased or free to play for the system to work at its full potential. It's very unlikely that Netflix will give importance to crypto games anytime soon. The core idea of the subscription service on which Netflix is built clashes with the ownership potential underlying the NFT concept. Generally speaking, most people already use Netflix, and this venture could be a nice addition to Netflix services rather than a gaming related milestone.     Netflix Enters the Gaming World.
