New Record in Sea Snail Exports from the Black Sea
The Black Sea Region met 40 percent of the periwinkles (sea snail) exported from Turkey to 4 different countries, especially South Korea. According to the data of the Eastern Black Sea Exporters' Association (DKİB), in the first six months, Turkey exported 239 tons of periwinkles to 4 countries, especially the Republic of South Korea.
An income of 1 million 333 thousand 583 dollars was obtained from periwinkle (sea snail) exports. These sea creatures, which are very popular in the Far East, are frequently consumed. Following the exports from Turkey, the Republic of South Korea 604 thousand 202, the People's Republic of China 302 thousand 70, Taiwan 287 thousand 950 and Japan has purchased 139 thousand 362 dollars of periwinkles.
Saffet Kalyoncu, Chairman of the Board of Directors of DKİB, emphasized that sea snails are not consumed in Turkey but they are quite ahead in exports. Kalyoncu made the following statements:
''The snail is collected with a special hunting and no harm is done to the species. In order to prevent the overproduction of sea snails from harming other populations, policies should be developed to provide foreign currency inflow to the country by allowing them to be hunted all year round except for 1 month, which is the spawning season, and by evaluating this species, which has no possibility of consumption in our country, through exports."
