Oxfam says that in Latin America, where social injustice is most intense, the wealthy is immune to the economic crisis created by the pandemic.
With a population of over 600 million, Latin America has become the region with the highest number of corona cases in the world as of Sunday. The World Health Organization is considered to be among the high-risk areas due to the 4.3 million cases, the region where the loss of life exceeds 184 thousand, the inadequate health system and the socio-economic problems it faces, and international institutions are calling for emergency assistance to the region.
With the pandemic, the United Nations (UN) predicts that the number of poor in the region will reach 231 million, the number of unemployed will reach 44.1 million and the number of people living below the hunger limit will reach 70 million. This means that one out of every three people in the region is poor, one out of eight are unemployed, and one out of nine cannot be fed enough to consume the minimum amount of energy needed to meet their daily needs.
