OnlyFans has suspended a plan to ban sexually explicit behavior
OnlyFans has suspended a plan to ban the sharing of sexually explicit behavior. The company of the same name, which operates the network, informed about it on twitter. The popularity of the platform, which became known for sharing paid content, grew mainly in the previous pandemic year and was closely linked to adult content.
"We have obtained the guarantees necessary to support our diverse community of creators and we have suspended the change of rules planned for October 1," the company wrote on
twitter. It did not give details. "The creators will soon receive an official e-mail," the operator added.
The platform said this week that it had banned adult content sharing under pressure from banking partners and payment providers. However, it now states that it is glad that the creators have spoken out and that the ban on sexually explicit content may not happen in the end.
In an interview with the Financial Times, the founder of the social network, Tim Stokely, described the behavior of banks as unfair. He said they complicated payments to content creators.
There has been speculation that other factors were at stake. For example, a report last week said the company was having trouble finding external investment to share adult content.
However, Stokely denied that OnlyFans "did not make this change in the rules to make it easier to find investors," says CNBC.
The founder of OnlyFans also rejected the notion that Mastercard could be behind the ban. The payment network is due to introduce stricter rules for merchants producing adult content from October 1, the same day that OnlyFans was to ban sexually explicit content.
Stokely said the company was already "fully compliant" with the new
Mastercard rules, which "have no effect" on changing the rules. A Mastercard spokesman told CNBC that the company had not contacted OnlyFans in connection with its decision.
"They made this decision themselves," said a spokesman for Mastercard. OnlyFans has recently been trying to rename it a platform for all types of creators, claiming that it is used by everyone from chefs to musicians. However, by far the most popular category on the web is porn.
The OnlyFans platform was founded in 2016 and now has around 130 million users. It has earned a place in the growing economy of content creators who make money from fans on networks like YouTube and Instagram. Among other things, sex workers resorted to OnlyFans during the pandemic.
