New York Mayor Bill de Blasio issued a statement Wednesday at a funeral for the rabbi, saying thousands of words in Brooklyn "are absolutely unacceptable" and warning that police at similar meetings will begin searching for or telling off criminals.
He said: “it was another big meeting that thousands of people tragically experienced. The extent of the danger posed by such an assembly is inevitable. That's why people will die against everyone's values.”
A police spokesman said he did not cite Rabbi Chaim Mertz at his funeral on Tuesday evening, but that would change. De Blasio and NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea also said it was done to warn people who violated social distance rules. The rabbi died at the age of 73 from Covid-19, according to NBC New York.
