Pfizer-USA Prepares for 1-Year Covid-19 Vaccines
Pfizer and its partner BioNTech said they have updated data that their vaccines are about 91 % effective in preventing Covid-19.
A White House official said on Thursday that the US is preparing for the possibility that people will need a booster vaccine between 9 and 12 months after being vaccinated against Covid-19.
David Kessler, chief scientific officer of President Joe Biden's Covid-19 intervention task force, said at a committee meeting that while investigating the duration of immunity after vaccination, booster vaccines may be needed.
Meanwhile, Pfizer Inc (NYSE: PFE) Chief Executive Officer Albert Bourla said people may need the Covid-19 vaccine for the third time in 12 months.
Preliminary data showed that vaccines from Moderna (NASDAQ: MRNA) Inc and Pfizer Inc, BioNTech SE (NASDAQ: BNTX) partners retained most of their efficacy for at least six months, but how long has not yet been determined.
Pfizer and its partner BioNTech said they have updated data that their vaccines are about 91 % effective in preventing Covid-19.
Despite the 6-month protection announced, experts think this may lead to the need for regular booster vaccinations similar to annual flu vaccines.
Rochelle Walensky, director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, told the House subcommittee hearing that the US also monitors infections in fully vaccinated people.
Stating that some vaccinated people also got the infection, Walensky said that some of these infections occur because the vaccinated person does not produce a strong immune response. But the main concern is the emergence of more infectious virus variants.
Earlier this month, Pfizer and its partner BioNTech said they have updated data that their vaccines are about 91 % effective in preventing Covid-19.
