PILOTS WILL BE HOSTESSES IN ICELAND

The most radical decision in the air transport industry, which had a major financial crisis due to the Corona virus outbreak, came from Icelandic company Icelandair. According to the news in Business Insider, Icelandair ended the job of all cabin crew personnel. As of Monday, there will be no air hostess and hostess on the airline's planes. But perhaps the more radical decision is that their task will be given to the pilots!

SERVICE AT MINIMUM LEVEL

"Icelandair has permanently put an end to the work of the existing cabin crew staff," the company said in a statement. It was underlined that the pilots who will undertake this task will not provide services such as meal service on board. The services in the cabin will continue to be at the minimum level within the framework of the measures taken after the corona virus outbreak.
Still, this decision sparked a lot of controversy. First, it is unclear whether pilots are legal to engage in such a mission. Second, cabin crews are vital in ensuring flight safety for passengers. For this, they enter various special trainings, succeed and start their duties after getting the certificate. The fact that the pilots, who had no training on this subject, would play such a role just two days later, drew a reaction.

SPECIAL EDUCATION REQUIRED TO BE A CABIN ATTENDANT

For example, to be a cabin crew in Delta Airlines of the USA, two months of training is required in areas such as swimming, CPR (cardiac massage), and completely evacuating the plane in 90 seconds. The Icelandic Cabin Crew Association, the Icelandic Transport Authority and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency did not make a statement on the issue. As with all airline companies, post-epidemic business has come to a point of collapse for Icelandair. For example, Icelandair, which carried 419 thousand people in May 2019, flew only 3 thousand 100 passengers in May of this year.
