Prime Minister Viktor Orbán Is Facing The Most Difficult Task In His Years
The Hungarian economy is projected to fall by 6 percent this year. However, new cases of COVID-19 are on the rise. Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who has been in power for more than ten years, is facing the most difficult task in his years.
Orbán: Investments, investments, investments
The weak economic outlook could pose a threat to Orbán, who is facing parliamentary elections in the first half of 2022.
The good situation in the economy, together with a strong anti-immigration campaign, helped him significantly in previous elections, in which he also won thanks to a tax policy in favor of the family. However, Hungary is relatively heavily dependent on the car industry.
"Investments, investments, investments. Tax cuts and investments," Orbán responded in an interview in Brussels to the question of how he will try to improve the economy.
"We focus on investment, because if we have investment, we have jobs," he added.
According to him, this will be enough for economic growth to start again without money from the new European Union recovery fund with a capacity of 750 billion euros for the entire bloc.
Asked if the government would extend the job support program, the so-called kurzarbeit, which expired a month ago, he said that if there was a reason to do so, the government would do so. But now he wants to focus more on investment.
