Public Sector Services In Greece Stalled For A 24-hour Strike
Public sector services in Greece stalled on Thursday for a 24-hour strike, whose demands include improving the salaries of health workers and education staff and hiring more workers during a coronavirus pandemic.
As air traffic control personnel are also taking part in the strike, airlines have had to cancel or reschedule flights scheduled for Friday by 8:00.
The main Greek trade union of public sector employees, ADEDY, also wants to strike an increase in health care expenditures, an increase in the number of beds in intensive care units and the recruitment of new employees into permanent employment in education so that schools can have a maximum of 15 pupils in one class.
Greece is experiencing a resurgence of the pandemic, which has increased pressure on the healthcare system.
The country, which has a population of approximately 11 million, reports approximately 300 to 400 cases of coronavirus daily. So far, 23,495 infections have been confirmed in
Greece, with 469 lives lost in COVID-19.
