Qantas will reduce its ground staff by more than 2,000
Australia's national airline Qantas will reduce its ground staff by more than 2,000 by leasing the services it provides from outside companies.
This reduction in the number of employees goes beyond the previously announced redundancies of 6,000 employees.
Qantas is trying to reduce its financial losses caused by the
COVID-19 pandemic. The BBC portal informs about it.
Employees affected by the change will be entitled to severance pay and support when moving to a new job, Qantas said.
The airline hopes to save $ 74 million a year by outsourcing groundhandling services. The company does not expect to resume international flights until the end of 2021. An exception could be a potential travel bubble between Australia and New Zealand.
According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), airlines will report total losses of $ 157 billion this year and next. IATA estimates that the global number of air passengers will fall to 1.8 billion this year from 4.5 billion in 2019. Next year, according to IATA, the global number of air passengers will only partially recover to 2.8 billion.
