Ready Player One gave us the illusion that the Metaverse was virtual reality

Everyrealm CEO Janine Yorio has dispelled misconceptions that the Metaverse is only available "only in VR."

Speaking during Korea Blockchain Week 2022 on Tuesday, Yorio told an audience in Seoul that Steven Spielberg's Ready Player One gave us a glimpse of what life might be like if we lived in the Metaverse. But according to Janine Yorio, the movie gives us this misconception about the Metaverse because "the hero wears a VR headset", even though most developments in the Metaverse are currently "developed for your desktop". "A lot more people have computers than VR headsets," Yorio said, emphasizing that consumer preferences are behind this because the way people "interact with technology" is "18 inches away from your face, not three inches away." Yorio emphasized that the idea of the Metaverse only being in VR is unrealistic, saying that while Ready Player One showed us that this "immersive photo real environment" is an exciting concept, it won't happen in the "near future" because that's not the way people interact with technology. The Everyrealm executive suggested that the Metaverse being "only in VR" conflicts with the way people are used to using the technology, which is often used for multitasking or "procrastination", whereas "when you're using VR you have to completely withdraw from life". He said that we can expect the next "12 to 36 months" to be the most exciting time for the Metaverse, noting that this will be when "many AAA (triple A) game studios... will actually start building and delivering the kind of Metaverse that people are looking forward to." Everyrealm is a company that invests in, manages and develops digital assets such as NFTs, metaverse platforms, gaming and infrastructure. The company currently has stakes in 25 Metaverse platforms, owns more than 3000 NFTs and manages more than 100 real estate developments.
